About the video: Conditions are already very difficult in some of the outer islands of the Mentawais. Even before the disaster, up to 32 per cent of children die (according to a 2002 UNESCO study) due to diarrhea, chest infections, bad or unclean birthing, and malaria. With conditions worsened due to the earthquake there are heightened concerns for the welfare of the villagers, especially the children.
As a result of the earthquake, coral reefs have risen in this area by about one metre making safe access to the villages difficult, increasing the navigational hazards, making relief efforts that much harder.
Having lived through the major earthquake and ensuing tsunami, in December 2004, the Indonesian people are more than aware the horrendous affects the giant tsunami had on Aceh, just north of the Mentawaiis. Not surprisingly, the local people live in fear of another earthquake and tsunami.
